About the Author
Gaston Rebuffat was born in Marseille, France in 1921 and died of cancer in Paris in 1985. He was one of the greatest French climbers in the mid-20th century. He began to climb aged 14 on his home crags, the soaring limestone cliffs at the Calenques along the Mediterranean shore and Mont Sainte-Victoire. Every summer he migrated north to climb in the Alps above Chamonix. Rebuffat became the first climber to ascend the six great north faces of the Alps. He was also a key member on the 1950 French expedition that climbed Annapurna, the first 8,000-metre peak ever climbed. Over his 50-year climbing career, he made over a thousand first ascents, including many in the Mont Blanc massif. Besides being a prolific climber, Gaston Rebuffat became a foremost mountaineering writer, despite having a very minimal formal education He wrote 20 books, wrote a regular climbing column for Le Monde newspaper, started his own publishing house in Geneva, and wrote and narrated several award-winning films.

About the Author
Thierry Lestable received his Engg. Degree and Ph.D from the Ecole Supérieure d'Electricité (Supelec) in 1997 and 2003 respectively. He has more than 12 years experience in leading edge Wireless Telecommunications, is author of 40+ international publications, including 2 Wiley Books, and 25+ patents. Since 2008, Dr. Lestable has been Technology & Innovation Manager at SAGEMCOM (Paris, France), in charge of Technology Strategy and Roadmap within CTO office.

Dr. Lestable is expert for the European Commission (FP7), and Eureka Cluster CELTIC, whilst chairing the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Expert Group in eMobility European Technology Platform. He is the Project Manager of FP7-BeFEMTO project targeting next generation LTE-based Femtocells, and initiated the FP7-EXALTED project dedicated to LTE-based M2M communications. Since 2010, he has been a member of the Telecom Steering Board from System@tic Competitiveness Cluster in France.

Within Alcatel labs (1998-2003), he investigated Multi-Carrier Wireless Systems paving the way for 4G Chinese systems with FuTURE 863 projects. Then, from 2004, Dr. Lestable was with Samsung Electronics Research Institute (SERI), UK, heading the Advanced Technology Group focusing on Advanced Channel Coding (LDPC), Iterative processing and Cross-Layer for MIMO-OFDM based systems. He actively contributed to IEEE 802.16m, and 802.20 standards, whilst participating in European research projects (FP6-WINNER), and creating FP7-DAVINCI Consortium.

Moshe Ran holds a PhD from Tel Aviv University, and has been the head of research and development authority at Holon Institute of Technology (HIT) since 2009. He has 25 years experience in state of the art communications systems and has lead R&D groups in several communication topics including: broadband access technologies, 3G and 4G systems, Short-range communications with focus on Ultra-wideband (UWB) technologies, error correction codes.

Dr. Ran formerly held prominent management and technical positions including CEO of MostlyTek Ltd. He has been an active member in standards bodies and technology-related partnerships including: IEEE802.16, ETSI/BRAN and WWRF. He was the project manager and coordinator of IST-FP6 STREP project named UROOF, targeting UWB over optical fibre for next generation broadband communications. He is a senior member of IEEE and has published more than 60 technical international publications and papers in the areas of error control coding and broadband wireless/wireline integration.

One of the readings for my credential program. This definitely isn't one of those hero teacher stories, but that's what makes each vignette poignant. It is more inspiring for the truths it carries and from the difficulties that Greg Michie faces as a teacher learning through trial and error, and illustrates what it means to care for students. If you're looking for a book that will show you raw experiences of what teaching is like, this is it. I know I will be rereading the stories when I need a reminder of how the grind of education reaps amazing, sometimes bittersweet rewards in how students' lives are impacted by good teachers.

Books on education typically come in two varieties--the extremely technical textbooks and the loosely based stories of someone's experiences. Michie is able to take this idea of having strong technical detail while not boring his audience to death and basing the entire reading on his own stories of teaching without feeling like you are reading a fiction novela.One of the most interesting and what I believe to be promising parts of his book is the fact that he constantly critiques his own teaching style and to be blunt, himself as a person and a teacher. And with his critique, comes the relevance perspective of the book. Schools today no matter where you are deal with this issue of racially different students, different achievement levels for students and the overall atmospheres our students live and grow up in.Through Michie's absolutely unique style we are presented with a new way of looking at education, looking at our own educational process, and most importantly our students. If you are looking to get into education, are already in it, or plan on doing some reading about education this is one of those must haves.4 Hopeful Stars out of 5!

Michie opened the book by saying it this is not a hero story, which helps defeat the stereotypes of white teachers in an urban school. Michie not only gives his takeaways from his experiences but also shows the students perspectives. He shows his intimate stories and experiences in the classroom and connects it to their school performance showing us that teachers don’t always understand why a student is acting a specific way.This book stresses that students have lives outside the classroom that can affect their performance. This book is enjoyable if you are currently or plan on going in to teaching. A must read if teaching students with different. Gives one mans truthful perspective of teaching in an urban school.

This book gives a lot to consider with regard to teaching and learning in an urban environment. It portrays the effects of poverty on inner city schools as well as some of the racial conflicts that can happen. This book is appropriate for all aspiring teachers (regardless of whether there is any intent to teach in an urban environment) but could be part of the curriculum for a mature high school ELA class.

Holler If You Hear Me was a pretty good book. Michie did a great job at giving his experiences at Ellison and Quincy. The thing I liked the most was how he humanized not only his students but also himself. Michie knew these kids were forced to have difficult lives from the start and that they continue to have difficult lives; no one chooses to go into poverty. But he also acknowledged that most of his work was done with other people. He wasn’t some sort of white savior but an honest, inexperienced teacher who found ways to reach these students along with the help of other colleagues. In the end, Michie not only taught his students well but also his students taught him well and judging by the looks of it he’s still learning, even after twenty-five years.

This is a great book about how education is in the real world and students' accounts of it. It's very easy to relate, being in a more story-like setting with characters you come to know and follow throughout the book. This makes it a much more digestible book and its text is much more flowing because of this.

I ordered this to preview for the possibility of using it to teach an introduction to education course. I am only about a third of the way through, but even though it's a decade (or so) old, the stories relate so well to what I think is happening in education today! I might not have this be the only book I use, but I will definitely supplement my class discussions with some of the chapters. I plan on buying the whole social justice set!

This is a beautifully written and compassionate account of how a very good teacher learned to teach -- by genuinely listening to his students and by continuously reflecting on his experiences. It is a book with heart and insight. And it's inspiring to see Michie's growth as a teacher from one experience to the next. This book is as real as it gets. Use in in your classes, if you teach prospective teachers. Buy it for anyone who cares about kids and public education. I love this book!
