The first chapter of Tegmark’s new book is called “Welcome to the most important conversation of our time,” and that’s exactly what this book is. Before diving into the book, a few words about why this conversation is so important and why Tegmark is a central agent helping make it happen and, through the book, the perfect guide.Have you notice how you don’t “solve” CAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) anymore? That’s because computers now can. Artificial Intelligence, from being a fairly niche area of mostly academic study a decade ago has exploded in the last five years. Much more quickly than many anticipated, machine learning (a subset of AI) systems have defeated the best human Go players, are piloting self-driving cars, usefully if imperfectly translating documents, labeling your photos, understanding your speech, and so on. This has led to huge investment in AI by companies and governments, with every sign that progress will continue. This book is about what happens if and when it does. But why hear about it from Tegmark, an accomplished MIT physicists and cosmologist, rather than (say) an AI researcher? First, Tegmark has over the past few years *become* an AI researcher, with 5 published technical papers in the past two years. But he’s also got a lifetime of experience thinking carefully, rigorously, generally (and entertainingly to boot) about the “big picture” of what is possible, and what is not, over long timescales and cosmic distances (see his last book!) – which most AI researchers do not. Finally, he's played an active and very key role (as you can read about in the book’s epilogue) in actually creating conversation and research about the impacts and safety of AI in the long-term. I don’t think anyone is more comprehensively aware of the full spectrum of important aspects of the issue. So now the book. Chapter 1 lays out why AI is suddenly on everyone’s radar, and very likely to be extremely important over the coming decades, situating present-day as a crucial point within the wider sweep of human and evolutionary history on Earth. Chapter 2 takes the question of “what is intelligence?” and abstracts it from its customary human application, to “what is intelligence *in general*?” How can we define it in a useful way to cover both biological and artificial forms, and how do these tie to a basic understanding of the physical world? This lays the groundwork for the question of what happens as artificial intelligences grow ever more powerful. Chapter 3 addresses this question in the near future: what happens as more and more human jobs can be done by AIs? What about AI weapons replacing human-directed ones? How will be cope when more and more decision are made by AIs what may be flawed or biased? This is a about a lot of important changes occurring *right now* to which society is, for the most part, asleep at the wheel. Chapter 4 gets into what is exciting – and terrifying – about AI: as a designed intelligence, it can in principle *re*design itself to get better and better, potentially on a relatively short timescale. This raises a lot of rich, important, and extremely difficult questions that not that many people have thought through carefully (another in-print example is the excellent book by Bostrom). Chapter 5 discusses where what happens to humans as a species after an “intelligence explosion” takes place. Here Tegmark is making a call to start thinking about where we want to be, as we may end up somewhere sooner than we think, and some of the possibilities are pretty awful. Chapter 6 exhibits Tegmark’s unique talent for tackling the big questions, looking at the *ultimate* limits and promise of intelligent life in the universe, and how stupefyingly high the stakes might be fore getting the next few decades right. It’s both a sobering and an exhilerating prospect. Chapters 7 and 8 then dig into some of the deep and interesting questions about AI: what does it mean for a machine to have “goals”? What are our goals as individuals and a society, and how can we best aim toward them in the long term? Can a machine we design have consciousness? What is the long-term future of consciousness? Is there a danger of relapsing into a universe *without* consciousness if we aren’t careful? Finally, an epilogue describes Tegmark’s own experience – which I’ve had the privilege to personally witness – as a key player in an effort to focus thought and effort on AI and its long-term implications, of which writing this book is a part. (And I should also mention the prologue, which gives an fictional but less *science*fictional depiction of an artificial superintelligence being used by a small group to seize control of human society. The book is written in a very lively and engaging style. The explanations are clear, and Tegmark develops a lot of material at a level that is understandable to a general audience, but rigorous enough to give readers a real understanding of the issues relevant to thinking about the future impact of AI. There are a lot of news ideas in the book, and although it is sometimes written in a breezy and engaging style, that belies a lot of careful thinking about the issues. It’s possible that real, general artificial intelligence (AGI) is 100 or more years away, a problem for the next generation, with large but manageable effects of “narrow” AI to deal with over a span of decades. But it’s also quite possible that it’s going to happen 10, 15, 20, or 30 years from now, in which case society is going to have to make a lot of very wise and very important (literally of cosmic import) decisions very quickly. It’s important to start the conversation now, and there’s no better way.

While one cannot help being taken in by Tegmark's boundless enthusiasm, the book contains essentially no substantial content that I could extract. It may have some value in increasing general awareness about the dangers of AI, as well as providing an optimistic outlook for our technological future; and for those who are utterly unfamiliar with these sorts of ideas, it provides a gentle and entertaining introduction. I might recommend it to children interested in AI, and science/technology more generally, but for serious enthusiasts: don't waste your time, skip right to Bostrom's "Superintelligence" instead.

Max Tegmark, thank you for accomplishing the astounding feat of writing a book that will clearly delight and intrigue your fellow brainiacs, but that is also actually accessible to English majors like myself, intimidated by complex science. What an exhilarating ride!! The importance of understanding AI, the potential impact on humanity, is certainly not limited to physicists, so it is really a service to biological beings to make the subject (mostly) understandable. The topic also so quickly brings up the BIG questions . . . which continue to have no definitive answers but for which you've given us so much food for thought. I also greatly appreciated your playfulness, humility and awe. I have now purchased your book 7 times. First I downloaded the audiobook, but saw I was going to need pictures for this one and downloaded it to my Kindle. Then because with four other couples we have a monthly movie night (like a book club but with movies) and will watch "Her" at our next one, I sent copies to the other participants. This is going to be a loooooong conversation. So long in fact, that if you are reading this, I wonder if you would recommend other movies that intelligently explore this topic?

Review

"This is no ordinary book on leadership. It is an engaging and highly readable exploration of our assumptions about leadership and management, balancing its examination across disciplines, levels of analysis, and issues of leadership ethics and leadership effectiveness. This book brings life to theory and presents a critical perspective that is both refreshing and provocative--certain to inspire students, practitioners, and scholars alike."--Ellen Van Velsor, Senior Fellow - Research, Innovation & Product Development, Center for Creative Leadership

"This multi-authored volume provides an engaging exploration of leadership from a variety of perspectives, but still manages to speak with a clear and compelling voice. The authors explain a wide range of issues and ideas in a lively manner that will involve readers in the uncovering of assumptions and the making of connections across contexts and disciplines. Exploring Leadership will encourage and inform reflection and debate among those who study, research, and participate in the dynamics of leadership on the personal, organizational, social, and even global level."--Eric Guthey, Associate Professor of Intercultural Communication and Management, Copenhagen Business School

"The people at the Centre for Leadership Studies have done it again. In taking a critical, interdisciplinary, multilevel perspective on leadership, they take the reader on a rollercoaster ride that is memorable. By enabling more critical reflections on leadership theory, development, and practice, this book is a must read for anyone interested in this highly complex topic."--Manfred F. R. Kets de Vries, Clinical Professor of Leadership and Organizational Change, INSEAD

I read a blog somewhere comparing this to Sarah J. Maas's A Court of Mist & Fury. I completely agree. Unfortunately, this is nowhere near as well done.I finished, but wasn't impressed. Maybe this will get you through until Maas's next installment. Maybe not.My issues:* It's nice to finally see a fantasy novel not featuring a YA-couple. Unfortunately, I found Callie to be very immature. So, basically it was like reading YA.* So much of this novel centered on Solstice, but the political machinations lacked depth. Further, for a gathering of all of these characters, the vast majority were flat. I would have loved to know more about Malaki, or about Mara, or about the Green Man, or about Janus. Or about any of the guards. Or about Gallagher. But.. nothing.* Basically everything leading up to Solstice, I found to be filler. The tour of the kingdoms served no purpose from a plot perspective. I think this whole novel could have been planned out much better.

I felt their were some major changes to the characters are the 2nd book developed and they were not the same individuals they were in the first book. Yes people change but they don't regress like this. More whiny less confident more juvenile etc. I still hated all the excessive swearing. Also juvenile. Great story though and I was sad to see it droop from the first book.

With a sigh and a lot of anticipation I close this second book in the trilogy. The first book was mainly about the romance and history between Callie and Des, but this one explores what has been happening in the Kingdoms of the Fae. The disappearance of the warriors, the sleeping women and the strange children. Not to forget the Thief of Souls...After what happened to Callie in the Kingdom of Fauna, the story is now taking place in the Kingdom of Flora during the mandatory celebrations of Solstice.I love the still developing relationship of Des and Callie. Even with all the scary events, they have their private moments. When the book ends, you will want to get your hands on the next one asap! I am enjoying this series a lot!I have seen reviews were readers are disappointed and I do understand. The first book was amazing and a love story. This is more like a bridge to a big finale, the in-between. I still love Des and Callie (even when she sometimes is a bit too eager to step into situations she is not equipped to handle to say it nicely).

I think I have a book hangover. This book was amazing. Laura Thalassa is a master story teller. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I could barely put this book down. It was over much too quickly, and left me desperately wanting more. I am so glad the last book comes out this winter. I cannot wait to read it. I NEED to know what happens next!I thoroughly enjoyed the character development in this second book in the Bargainer series.Desmond, the Bargainer, King of the Night Court, and Lord of Chaos, is an even more complex character than the first book hinted at. I loved diving into his past and learning about his family.Callie continues to astound me with her strength of character and sheer force of will. No matter what happens she refuses to be a victim. She continues to get stronger and train to better face her enemies. Would that we all had such strength.Temper is my favorite character. I love the dynamic between Temper and Callie. Their friendship reminds me of myself and my best friend. There were some great moments where we learned about Temper’s powers that were just vaguely illuded to in the first book. I hope she gets her own happily ever after eventually. If you have read the first book in the Bargainer series, you HAVE to pick this book up. You won’t want to put it down.

I have mixed feelings about A Strange Hymn. I really liked Rhapsodic for the strength of its lead characters and the development of their relationship (both past and present). I appreciated that the second installment continued to highlight this aspect (although it was not as much of a focus as before). Even though this book picked up where the last one left off, I had a hard time getting into the story. There were several sections throughout that just dragged. I did enjoy the further exploration of the Otherworld - including the tour of the Night Kingdom. I really wanted more world building after reading Rhapsodic so this was satisfying. However, with Callie's powers pretty much unusable in that realm, she lost some of what made her a strong and confident character previously. Instead, she was relatively useless to defend herself and became heavily reliant on Des. Her physical training was okay, but I'm not sure why she trained with a sword when she preferred to use daggers. It was nice to have Temper show up more in this, but she still felt underutilized and a bit flat. The last few chapters were more exciting with several big reveals, but they mainly served to set up the last novel in the trilogy. This was a decent continuation of the series, but I wasn't as impressed with it.

Two Months Earlier, New York City

What are you drinking?” I shouted.

My friend Teresa stared back at me. We had moved to the bar in the corner of the club, but it wasn’t much quieter over here.

“What are you drinking?”

She squinted at me. “Huh?”

“What . . . are . . . you . . . drinking?” I screamed over the music.

“Oh.” Teresa held up her glass. The ice cubes jangled in a dark liquid, darker and thicker than Coke. “It’s Red Bull and Jägermeister. Here. Try it, El.”

She shoved the glass into my hand. I took a sip, swallowed, and felt my face shrivel up. “It’s disgusting. That’s the worst thing I ever tasted.”

She smiled. “I know.” She took back the glass and raised it, toasting me.

The place was called Beach Club, even though it was nowhere near a beach. We were on Second Avenue on the East Side of Manhattan. It was our favorite club, our subterranean hideaway where we escaped nearly every weekend.

My name is Ellie Saks, and I’m twenty-four years old. Why do I need a subterranean hideaway? Don’t ask.

A long metal stairway, dark and kind of creaky, like a subway entrance, led down to the club. And when we got to the bottom, our heels clicking on the rickety metal steps, we found ourselves in this amazing place, all silver and chrome and lights and mirrors.

Rows of silver tables and booths stretched along both walls, with the dance floor between them. Couples jammed the wide dance floor. Red and white lights pulsed in time to the throbbing dance music.

An enormous ceiling mirror reflected the dancers and the lights. Following Teresa to the curving chrome bar in the back, I had stared up at the upside-down dancers and thought it might be fun to be up there with them, graceful and oblivious, safe from the chaos below.

The bar was full, but two tall, long-haired girls in embroidered red halter tops and short shorts stood up just as we arrived, and we grabbed their high-backed stools. I ordered my usual glass of chardonnay. Then I made the mistake of tasting Teresa’s drink.

I kept swallowing, trying to get rid of the taste. “It tastes like . . . bubble gum and Robitussin.”

Teresa tilted the glass to her mouth and took a long drink. “Hey, you got it. Cough medicine. Yeah.” She laughed.

She has a high, hoarse laugh, sort of like a little boy’s. She doesn’t look like a little boy, though. She’s tall and a little plump, with sexy big green eyes, and piles of long, coppery curls streaked with blond, hair that she’s always playing with, tossing from side to side.

“Everyone’s drinking it. Know who introduced me to it? Ellie, remember Paulo? The guy in the mail room?”

I set my glass of chardonnay down on the bar. “You went out with Paulo?”

Teresa nodded, grinning.

“Does he speak English?” I asked.

“I’m not sure. The bar he took me to was as noisy as this one. I couldn’t really hear a word he said. Then we went back to his place. On Avenue A, I think. But he didn’t talk much.”

I shook my head. “Teresa, why did you go out with him?”

She coiled and uncoiled a thick lock of hair. “I wanted to see the rest of his tattoos.”

We both laughed.

I turned the stem of the wineglass between my fingers. “And? Go on. Tell. Did you see them?”

She nodded. “Yes. But it didn’t work out. When I read one that he had down there—you know, down there—I had to leave.”

“Excuse me? What did it say?”

“M-O-M.”

I shouldn’t have taken a drink. White wine went spewing out my nose. I was sputtering and choking and laughing, all at the same time.

The guy next to me turned around. “Are you okay?”

My eyes had teared up, but I could still see that this guy was drop-dead gorgeous. Sort of a young Brad Pitt, with a curl of streaky brown hair falling casually over his forehead and a stubble of beard over his boyish cheeks.

“I’ll probably survive,” I said, wiping my nose with my hand. I reached for a cocktail napkin on the bar and knocked the wineglass over.

But he caught it before it spilled.

“Wow. Good hands,” I said.

His blue eyes flashed. “I’d better have. I’m going to be a surgeon in another two years.” He slid the wineglass back to me.

Okay.

Teresa and I had been hanging out at this club for months. And yet, somehow this was the first time a movie-star surgeon-to-be had said hello to me. Maybe things were looking up.

He leaned closer, bringing his face close to mine, so close I got a strong whiff of his Gio cologne. He breathed into my ear, “Maybe I could operate on you tonight.”

I knew Teresa was watching this whole exchange intently. I could feel her breath on the back of my neck.

I slid away from the Love Doctor. “Could I offer you some advice?”

His eyes narrowed. “Advice? You mean, don’t ever say that line again?”

I nodded.

We both laughed. He clinked his Heineken bottle against my wineglass. “One-to-nothing, you,” he said. He didn’t take his blue eyes from mine. He didn’t even blink. “You’re kinda pretty.”

I smiled. “So are you.”

He didn’t react to that at all. I guess he hears it a lot.

“You’ll have to cut me some slack tonight,” he said. “I spent the whole day with cadavers.”

I took a sip of chardonnay. “Is that your second-best pickup line?”

I know. I should have been nicer to him. I could feel Teresa’s disapproval, feel her eyes burning through the back of my blouse. She’d been trying her best to find me a new boyfriend, and here I was, letting her down.

I took a sip of wine and decided to show some interest. “Which med school do you go to?” I asked.

He emptied his beer bottle, set it down, and then grinned at me. Perfect teeth, of course. “I’m taking a home-study course.”

I laughed. “You’re getting funnier.”

“Actually, NYU,” he said. He signaled the bartender for another Heineken and ordered another glass of wine for me. He stuck out his hand for me to shake. “I’m Bernie.”

Bernie? With that face? How can he be a Bernie?

“Ellie,” I said. His hand was cold from the beer bottle.

I took a long sip of wine. Someone bumped me from behind. I heard Teresa groan. A hand grabbed my shoulder. “Ellie, hey. Here you are.”

I let go of Bernie’s hand and spun around. And stared into a familiar face, its red cheeks glistening with sweat, eyes cloudy, furry eyebrows moving up and down rapidly, as if alive.

“Clay? What are you doing here?”

“Looking for you, naturally.”

“Whoa, listen—”

Teresa stuck her face between us. “I don’t think she wants to see you.”

Clay blinked several times, as if clearing his head. He frowned at Teresa. “Who are you?”

He swayed a little, still holding on to my shoulder.

Clay’s friends call him Bear because—well, he looks like a bear. He’s stocky and broad-chested, with muscular arms and legs, covered with dark brown hair. He has a round, boyish face, with red cheeks you want to pinch. Wiry brown hair on his head, cut short like fur, and round gray eyes under thick brown eyebrows.

I used to think of him as a cute teddy bear, but I don’t now. After I told him I didn’t want to go out with him anymore, Clay stopped being cute.

He started calling me night and day, following me, showing up at my apartment in the middle of the night, totally wasted and strung out, sending flowers and gifts, flooding me with e-mails, begging, pleading.

It took me a long while to realize he was stalking me. I mean, it’s not exactly something that happens to you all the time.

And then when I finally figured it out, I didn’t know how to deal with him. You see, I never meant for it to get serious.

Clay was one of the first guys I met when I moved to New York. He took me out to restaurants and to Knicks games at the Garden, jazz clubs in the Village. It was great to be living in New York City and have someone to be with on weekends.

He was an intense kind of guy. But I never stopped to realize how serious he was becoming. And then when I knew I had to get out of it, I tried to explain it all to him. I tried to be nice. I didn’t want to hurt him.

I just wanted him to be gone.

And now he had his arms around me, and I tumbled off the bar stool. He was holding on to me, grinning, his eyes glassy, unfocused. “Just one dance, Ellie.”

“Clay, you’re totally wasted, aren’t you,” I said, struggling to loosen his hold.

“Maybe. I guess I’m a little fucked up. Hey, I have some little pills we could share.”

“Excuse me?”

He pulled me with both hands. He was very strong. His shirt was open. I could see sweat glistening on his carpet of chest hair. “Maybe we could talk. You know. Just . . . talk.”

“On the dance floor? Clay, I can’t hear a thing.”

We stumbled into other dancers. His face grew even redder under the pulsing lights, like a bomb about to explode.

The music repeated:

Y’all ready for this?

Y’all ready for this?

No, I’m not ready for this. I didn’t want to dance with Clay. I didn’t want him to pull me away, his eyes so crazy,...
