About the Author

Ken A. Dill is Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco. He received his undergraduate training at MIT, his PhD from the University of California, San Diego, and did postdoctoral work at Stanford. A leading researcher in biopolymer statistical mechanics and protein folding, he has been the President of the Biophysical Society and received the Hans Neurath Award from the Protein Society in 1998. Sarina Bromberg received her BFA at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, her PhD in molecular biophysics from Wesleyan University, and her postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco. This is a fine introductory text covering the basics of molecular statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, as well as their applications to a number of systems that are likely to be of interest to those studying the biosciences or other areas that depend on the concepts covered in this book. It is not a book for "experts" or an advanced graduate level text.One nice feature of the book, especially for bioscience students whose math may be rusty, are the chapters devoted to mathematical tools in the context of the book's subject matter.If you want a more in-depth text at an advanced level, look elsewhere. If you want a solid down-to-earth introduction to these subjects, this is a good place to start, especially if your math background is not particularly strong.

Dill and Bromberg's effort is extraordinary. I don't think there are other text books out there that explain complex matters in such a rigorous but accessible way. I would recommend this book to anyone who's taking an undergrad or grad course in thermodynamics, statistical thermodynamics or anything remotely similar, as this book will really enlight you. It may happen because of the main text, the examples or the exercises, but it will happen.I've had the chance to read both the first and second edition. Information has been reorganized a little bit and the new chapters are great. Go get this book.

Great read and goes well with Israelachvili's Intermolecular and Surface Forces.

This book is very easy to understand and has plenty of examples imbedded within the text. Perfect for upper division physical chemistry classes. I bought this specifically for a class but found that I enjoyed reading it. Dill (the author) lays out the facts of physical chemistry almost like a story that is fascinating to read.

About the Author
Andrew J. Friedland is The Richard and Jane Pearl Professor in Environmental Studies and Chair of the Environmental Studies Program at Dartmouth. He was the founding chair of the Advanced Placement Test Development Committee (College Board) for Environmental Science. He has a strong interest in high school science education and in the early years of APES he participated in a number of trainer and teacher workshops at Kimball Union Academy, Dartmouth College, and elsewhere. During many of the last ten summers, he has guest lectured at the St. Johnsbury Academy (Vermont) AP Institute for Secondary Teachers. Friedland regularly teaches introductory environmental science and energy courses and has taught courses in forest biogeochemistry, global change, and soil science, as well as foreign study courses in Kenya. For more than two decades, Friedland has been researching the effects of air pollution (lead, nitrogen, sulfur, calcium) on high-elevation forests of New England and the Northeast. More recently, he has begun investigating the impact of individual choices and personal action on energy consumption and the environment.  Friedland has served on panels for the NSF and USDA Forest Service and has just finished serving on his third panel of the Science Advisory Board of the EPA. He has authored or coauthored more than fifty-five peer-reviewed publications and one book, Writing Successful Science Proposals (Yale University Press). Friedland received BAs in Biology and Environmental Studies and a PhD in Geology from the University of Pennsylvania.  He is passionate about saving energy and can be seen wandering the halls of the Environmental Studies Program at Dartmouth with a Kill-A-Watt meter, determining the electricity load of vending machines, data projectors, and computers.  Rick Relyea is Director of the Jefferson Project at Lake George for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a groundbreaking partnership between Rensselaer, IBM, and the FUND for Lake George. For the project, Relyea leads a team of Rensselaer scientists, engineers, computer scientists, and other experts who are using the latest in science and technology to understand, predict and enable a resilient ecosystem for nearby Lake George.  From 1999 to 2014, Relyea was at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2005, he was named the Chancellor’s Distinguished Researcher and in 2014 he received the Tina and David Bellet Award for Teaching Excellence. From 2007-2014, Relyea served as the director of the university’s field station, the Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology, where he oversaw a diverse set of ecological field courses and facilitates researchers from around the world. Rick has taught thousands of undergraduate students in introductory ecology, behavioral ecology, and evolution. His research is recognized throughout the world and has been published in Ecology, Ecology Letters, American Naturalist, PNAS, and other leading ecological journals. The research spans a wide range of ecological and evolutionary topics including animal behavior, sexual selection, ecotoxicology, disease ecology, phenotypic plasticity, community ecology, ecosystem ecology, and landscape ecology. Currently Relyea’s research focuses on aquatic habitats and the diversity of species that live in these ecosystems.

Lucius chooses a bus seat so as to be left alone and is immediately called "crip"; Aurora gets on the same bus, smiles at people, and hears a voice call "New girl! Come sit back here with us." It doesn't help that Lucius has an air of arrogance about him and has changed schools to find a new start. The author spends equal time on several plotlines: Lucius, the brilliant loner destructo-kid, his amusing sister and his dysfunctional family; Aurora and her newly widowed saintly father; Nick, the good-guy security guard with dreams of the NFL; a school play; a false accusation; and Cecelia and Jessup, the scheming spurned lovers. Resolving everything makes the final chapters feel rushed and too perfect. However, the pacing is energetic and the topics current.
